From Erling Jensen's military records we were able to determine that Lt.
Jensen fought as a Signal Officer in the Tunisian Campaign, was present
and fought in the Normandy Invasion, fought in the Northern France
Campaign, followed by the Ardennes Campaign, Rhineland Campaign and
Central Europe Campaign. Few Army Signal OCS graduates have fought in as
many campaigns as this one Officer did.
In part because he spoke a little Danish, and too because as a
civilian he worked as a long distance test board serviceman for his
local phone company, he found himself assigned to the Signal Corps. His
records show a man who started off in the enlisted men's Signal Corps
training program, only to find himself transferred when he finished
there to Officer training in Signal OCS.
A native of Hudson, Wisconsin, Candidate Jensen served his country well, being
awarded the American Defense Service Ribbon, the American Theater
Ribbon, followed again a second time with a Silver Star added to it, and
incredibly a third time too, this time with a Bronze Star. He was also
awarded 5 O/S Service Bars and the World War II Victory Medal.
After all of Officer Jensen's time in the war in Europe, he was finally sent
home. He left Europe as a Captain on 1 November 1945, and came ashore in
America on 13 November 1945. A man with blond hair and striking blue
eyes, Captain Jensen had gone from being born in Denmark on 18 August 1905, to
being a true American hero. He represented the best of the best, the men
who made up America's Greatest Generation.
We raise a glass in toast to Captain Erling Jensen.
