Fort Gordon's Freedom Park
Bricks, Bricks, Bricks
This is Freedom Park and in the foreground is the Signal Corps OCS section.
Early in 1997, Fort Gordon initiated a plan to establish Freedom
Park, where the old Post HQ building once stood. Soon thereafter the plan was
expanded to provide a Signal Corps OCS area, with World War II, Korean War and Vietnam
War monuments to the OCS program. The Park includes benches, lighting, shrubbery, fountains, and other enhancements to commemorate the contributions of Fort Gordon to freedom.
On 11 May 1998, the first order for the commemorative bricks was
sent to Fort Gordon. The order was for 1,273 of the 1,600 bricks
required. Colonel Thom Tuckey agreed to start the engraving
process on these and to later add the remainder by class.
The Vietnam Signal OCS era monument, one of three monuments - - to the World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War era Officer Candidate Schools for the Signal Corps.
Leading to the above area is a long walkway where our bricks,
for Signal Corps OCS graduates, cadre, family members and significant others,
are located. These
memorial bricks allow one to list a name, class, friend
or family member to honor.
Bricks of Officer Candidate School Association members that have been installed on the walk.
There are commemorative
as well as memorial bricks to honor the living, as well
as those who have gone on before us. The Association established
a goal of 1,600 bricks at that time. We are excited to report that 1,700 bricks were sold.
The Association dedicated the bricks at Freedom Park at a memorial service at
the 1999 Reunion. The Freedom Park location has been used since then for memorial services
for the Association, during Reunion weekends. Plans are to continue that tradition.
