After graduation from OCS; assigned to
Communications Officers School at Ft Sill Oklahoma (Webmaster's note:
see PDF icon below for overview of Ft. Sill training programs during
1967. 6,287 Officer Candidates graduated during that period). I drove
out there there with Barry Butram and his wife.
After school Sept of 68, was sent to Vietnam;
assigned to 52nd Artillery Group, Pleiku and Commo Officer for 6/14th
Artillery (8" and 175 MM guns).
One of our fire bases was a Special forces camp
called Ben Het in the Central Highlands which always brought up memories
(...of my TAC Officer at Signal OCS). There was a siege at Ben Het for
about 55 days. Also commanded resupply convoys to Ben Het during the
siege (April - May 69). By the grace of God, only got a few scratches.
In April of 69, reassigned to 1/92 Artillery (155
Howitzers) as commo officer and HQ Battery commander at the Forward
Command Post at Dak To. I had to go to Cam Ran Bay to get some Crypto
gear repaired and got to see Barry Buttram who was, I believe, with 4th
Division Infantry.
Returned
home in Sept of 1969 and decided to get out. Did not want to run the
risk of again reporting to some senior officers who should not have been
commanding anything but an egg beater. Worked as an Insurance Broker for
multinational businesses. Found gainful employment with Johnson &
Higgins, a large Insurance Broker in January in 1970 and worked for them
and Marsh & McLennan, the company that bought us, until retirement in
2010.
