After
leaving Gordon I was assigned to the East Coast Telecommunications Center in
DC, and talked myself into the job of computer operations officer – I didn’t
know much about computers, but everyone else knew less. I went from there to
the 25th Infantry Division, north of Saigon, and spent the year
as Command Information Officer, running the newspaper, magazine, radio
station and combat correspondents.
When I got out of the Army I went to work for the Harvard University Press,
and then joined Arthur D. Little as a consultant on new computer publishing
systems and the information industry. From there I went to the Washington
Post Company, and then to Minneapolis, as General Manager of the newspaper.
In 1982 I started my own consulting practice, specializing in the emerging
information industry, and did that for 25 years.
It's all been great fun. In the last few years I have been writing a lot. I
published four books and am working on another. My wife and I have five kids
and four grandchildren, and we live in Ipswich, Massachusetts, about 15
miles from where I grew up. And for all of that, I still remember OCS and
the two years that followed as a wonderful period of my life.
